Understanding EEOICPA

The Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA) was created to provide compensation and medical benefits to workers who became ill from exposure to radiation or toxic substances while employed in the U.S. nuclear weapons industry. Many of these individuals worked at Department of Energy (DOE) sites, uranium mines, or for contractors and subcontractors supporting national defense projects.

EEOICPA recognizes that these workers sacrificed their health in service to the country. The program offers two main types of benefits: financial compensation and medical coverage through what’s known as the White Card. This card allows approved individuals to receive medical care for their covered conditions at no cost.

How the Process Works

Eligibility is determined through documentation of employment and medical diagnosis. Once a claim is approved, the individual receives compensation and medical benefits. The Department of Labor administers the program, and approved providers such as Nuclear Care Partners deliver in‑home care and support services to eligible patients.

As an EEOICPA Nurse Advocate, I help individuals understand the program, gather the right information, and connect with trusted providers who can guide them through the next steps. My goal is to make the process clear and accessible — because no one should have to navigate it alone.
